South Carolina
Managed to go to top 4 in SC this weekend, although the top 8 win was due to my opponent having one of his fate cards in his pile of tokens instead of his deck. Judge made me decide whether or not to DQ the guy instead of doing it himself, after a rules team guy told him that was the right call. I might write a report on it later, it probably won't be that detailed though.

Was playing Spider paragons, deck list is here: http://spider.daigotsu.com/viewtopic.php?t=5840&highlight=
I know, I felt like shit about it. >.< But the rules guy said that was the right call, what else could I do? Funny thing is, in play testing I did the same exact thing, since my fate deck and tokens had the same sleeves on them.
Spider are winning, sure, but Crane got there first. We are now officially the worst clan. Someone did make it to top 2 in Poland, so we're slowly getting there.

Sucks but that's what you get when you choose to play with a good card. *shrug*
I think part of the problem is like unicorn spider has a smaller player base... I still think the advantages you guys get for going last, not being able to do well against dishonor, not getting to steal from other clans are all big parts of why I hate spider design in some ways.

Re: South Carolina
heh funny you should mentioned dishonor, that was actually one of my wins. Got an early Taishuu and Formal Apology, plus a Shinden Shorai that I actually used to play two dudes. I think it was turn five when I took his last province at -24 honor. Oh, and I seppuku'ed someone for the first time ever, and Willed him back into play to snag a province. xD
Things I learned from this event, after considering in hindsight:
-If a Crab guy assigns to two provinces, and one of the armies has Shinoda in it, DEFEND AGAINST SHINODA. I don't know how I screwed this one up. >.< lol
-In the first game of the Top 4 match, I saw that the guy was trying to honor out with his Lion paragons rather than try to kill me. I drew three Know Their Minds AND Aya this game, and he only had two guys to buy for two straight turns. If I'd just locked down his dynasty and built up for an extra turn instead of attacking early I might have had a chance, but I failed to adapt to the situation at the time and just played aggressively like always.
That's why we play all these games right? We learn why we lost and don't repeat those mistakes?
I still feel bad for the guy who got DQ'ed. >.< I'm sure he's quite angry with me.

I agree, seppuku has a very distinct hard to tell point of use, at any cost is so good with seppuku XD.
Yeah you defend against shinoda. But if he is stacking right it makes it bad no matter what.
Another thing I do often, attacking to early. When you have the advantage, use it. Honor or not wait till the last minute if you can although it can be hard to read sometimes (like dishonor burst).
Only person he should be angry with is himself for screwing up, If anything that card he left out could of won him the game. Personally I wouldn't of DQ'd him but he would of had to throw that particular game of best of 3.

For whatever reason the TO at this event decided that top 8 would be single elim (I guess he wanted to go home at a decent hour), so that game was the only game.

Re: South Carolina
I would like to respond to some of the comments. I was the Head Judge. I will address the DQ situation first. Lee was the gentleman you were playing in that match. I did DQ him as I am the only one who can do that at a kotei. I presented you with the option of letting him discard the card and continue playing or take the win via DQ. I was fine with either. Lee knows he made the mistake and yes, he was very frustrated with you, but mainly at himself. If you had made that mistake, I bet any amount of money you would have felt the same way. His main frustration was that he had won the honor contest and Top Lion. If he hadnt made a dumb mistake, it could have been a clean sweep of the kotei for him. I as a player like to win my matches on my on merits and not on a technicality so that is why I presented you with that option. That said, this was Top 8 match so a lot of people would have done what you have so no one is faulting you. It was a long day, you still had a few matches left to go so I completely understand taking an easy win.

I agree with this statement firmly, although it was a single elim round. At Top 8, players cant make newbie mistakes. Yes it sucks, but suck it up and play tighter. I guarantee you he wont make that mistake again.
As far as the Top 16 and 8 being single elims go, this was announced much earlier in the day so there should have been no surprise there. Why may you ask? This is 2 fold. 1. Many people traveled by car from long distances such as yourself to our kotei and we still ended up leaving at 12 the way it was run. 2. The other reason and main one was that the Product wall behind the registers fell on the TO 45 min before the doors opened. He soldiered through with a hurt arm and back so you guys could enjoy your kotei. So playing until 2am or longer was not an option. We could have continued the next day but how many people would have complained of that? I did notice that throughout the day you seemed bothered by a decent amount of decisions that were made from how the top 16 and 8 were run to the number of games each round was, so I apologize that you didnt have a good time and we didnt meet your expectations. Out of 99 people that attended I can tell you with a certainty that 90% of the people who did attend had a great time and agreed with how we ran things so again I am sorry that you didnt. You did make Top 4 so congratulations. I hope you give us another chance next year, but be a little more forgiving of our decisions or at least get an understanding of the whole situations before you pass judgement. The way that the elims were run were requested by more than 3/4 of the Top 16 so we obliged them as they didnt want to be there all night. I enjoyed having you and your playgroup there as you are all very skilled players. Making as far as you did with Spider Paragons is a testament of your skill as not many people have been able to make it as far as you did the whole kotei season with that clan. I wish you and your group continued success and thank you for attending.

I appreciate you stopping in to clear that up. I couldn't imagine the difficulties of running a 99 man/person kotei. From all accounts it was well ran and I understand that tough decisions have to be made in the face of time limits. Again, congrats to mike and to yourself on a successful weekend.

Re: South Carolina
The whine must be pretty strong with me these past few days. I'm sorry if it seemed like I was badmouthing you. I won't lie, being paired against the only other Spider guy in the top 16 game was pretty frustrating at the time, given Spider presence at the top tables lately. Coupled with my frustrations over that top 8 match, which just felt like a really cheap way to advance on top of everything else, and I can see how you might conclude that I was unhappy with the event as a whole. Despite all my blustering, I meant what I said at the end of the day. You guys did an incredible job with the limited resources you had, and overall I had a great time. I'm sure the other Gainesville guys will want to come back next year, and I'd love to go too, if you'll have me.
P.S. I guess I was complaining pretty loudly about the top matches being single elim as well, I'm sorry about that too. I get nervous when I make it to top tables, and with that comes the whining. I had no idea we had an injured TO, I hope he's ok! Getting to bed at a decent hour was certainly a nice bonus, so you guys were completely in the right there as well.

Sleep, Damasko, and I are located in Tampa FL and we alternate between Anthem-Games and The Dark Side. Hopefully we will be in a better financial situation next year and get back on our 3-4 kotei run. I look forward to heading up to SC next year.
