Shinjo Bushi - Shinjo Imra Empty Shinjo Bushi - Shinjo Imra

The dagger in Daston's hand was exquisite, a family heirloom, pearl encrusted handle, a blade of the finest steel, a cats-eye pommel, and from it dripped the blood of his father, a father he loved dearly.  The Caliph's guards rushed into the room, scimitar's drawn, their shouts drowned out by a pounding in Daston's head, all he could hear was the pounding of his heart as he held the weapon that had killed his father.  Daston's Uncle Raffaj, the Caliph's adviser pointed accusingly at the dead Caliph's son, the heir to his father's position, the rush of the moment came to a quick and abrupt end as the blade of one of the guard's weapons sang through the air, narrowly missing Daston's head as he rolled forward under the blade.  His body was under his own control again, and he rolled forward to his feet brandishing his father's dagger.

Daston yelled out of desperation, "I did not kill my father!", as he deflected a guard's blade.  His uncle countered, "Liar! Guard's seize him! Kill him if you have too! I saw it myself! I saw him kill the Caliph! He seeks to usurp his father's position!"

Parrying a second blow from another guard Daston looked around for an escape, the exit to his father's chambers was blocked by more guards entering.   He turned and rushed past his father's bed, the deathly expression on his father's face forever burned into his mind.  Coming to the balcony edge he looked out, there was no where to go, a leap from this height would kill him, and the walls of the caliph's tower were smooth unlike the slums below.  As a second guard rushed forward he blocked the blow and tucked under the guard lifting him and tossing him over the balcony's edge.  The guard grabbed Daston's arm and held on for dear life, nearly dragging the both of them off the balcony together.  Before he could though Daston stabbed the guard, who then dropped away screaming and clipped into the balcony below, Daston's escape!

Grabbing the excessively long curtains at the balcony's side Daston put the dagger into his belt, his father's blood staining his white shirt.  He rushed forward and leaped clear of the balcony, the fabric of the curtains ripping and tearing as it reached its length before pulling him back towards the balcony below.  He landed with a roll in the quarters of the Caliph's personal harem of female entertainers, several of them screamed in surprise, several of them screamed with excitement!  To say that Daston was a ladies man was an understatement, but this was not a time for women.   As he pushed past the excited women Daston could hear the guards yelling above, he wouldn't have long to get out of the tower, but where could he go, the Caliph's guards were now under the control of his uncle, and would search the entire city.

As Daston fled his father's tower he would eventually run into a band of guards and at the head his younger, bigger, brother!

"DASTON!", his brother Garsiv yelled, Daston came to an immediate stop, turning to face his brother.  "Brother!", Daston smiled and walked forward his arms open, "There has been some mistake! I didn't kill father, something or someone was controlling me! I had no control of my body, I swear it..."  As Daston hoped to appeal to his brother, he didn't expect the slice that split his cheek open.   "You always were father's favorite, Brother!", Daston leapt backward in surprise.   "Uncle Raffaj told me what he saw!  I'll kill you brother for what you have done to father! You couldn't just wait... you couldn't ever be happy!".  Garsiv was a tall man, well built an strong, in his hands a long ornate scimitar and his favorite short-axe.

Daston could tell that his brother would not listen, he was never one to listen and was always one to be jealous of anything Daston did or received.  "Well brother, I see you won't listen...", Daston rushed forward and faked right before juking left, dodging a downward swing by his brother, he pushed himself off a small box hanging near the corridor wall and leaped upward onto a beam above.   "So I'll just be leaving!", Daston grinned, and his brother cursed, ordering his guards to the roof-tops!

As Daston leaped from roof to roof all that he could think of was the dagger in his hand, he had killed his father, whether he was in control or not, he had done it.  No one could deny that fact, no one could argue for him, even his brother would not vouch for him, he believed his father's brother completely.   "Perhaps, my father's closest friend, the merchant lord Amar would listen."

Amar quietly sat in his study, as he finished up the final numbers on the records for the night he rose and walked to his own balcony, the moon was full tonight, and tomorrow Amar would have to venture with his caravan south to Rokugan's borders again to trade with the Unicorn merchants at Outsider Keep.  The luck of being elected as one of the few merchant houses to be allowed to serve as the trading representative with the Unicorn had brought extreme wealth to Amar and his family.   His friend the Caliph Sharaman was an honest man, and under his rule the Medinaat al-Salaam had grown prosperous again, not partially due to trade with their Unicorn allies in the land of Rokugan.  Amar, perked up when he heard some scratching above his balcony. He would need to have his house-keepers check if some birds had nested on the roof again.  As he looked up to his surprise he saw the face of a man, not birds.

"Daston! What in the Burning Sands are you doing on my roof at this hour you miscreant!".   Daston dropped onto the balcony from the roof, "I'm in trouble my friend."   Amar walked back into his room, lighting several candles near his desk, "What did you do this time?  Lose something that belonged to the family? Get caught with the harem girls again?"

"I killed my Father."

Amar stopped in his tracks, his face went pale...  "YOU WHAT?!"  Daston stepped forward, sorrow in his eyes, "I didn't want too, something was controlling me, I was bewitched by some magic.   The last thing I remember was falling asleep in my room and the next thing I knew the dagger, my father's dagger was in my hands coated in his blood.  When I came back to myself my uncle was yelling at me, calling me a murderer!", Daston was visibly shaken, he wiped a tear or two from his eyes.

Amar, looked down and paced rubbing his beard in thought.   "Your father loved you...  You may be a trouble maker but a murderer?  You hardly have the courage to admit to when you are in trouble to your father let alone murder a man in cold blood."  Amar picked up his pipe and pushed some tobacco into it before lighting it and puffing once or twice.  "You can't stay here... I've never trusted your Uncle, he was always harsh during my meetings with your father.  If he has the guards looking for you, its only a matter of time before they come searching here or find you in the city."

Daston looked out from the balcony, "But where can I go?  If I can't stay here then where?"

Amar looked up and smirked, "To our friends in Rokugan... The Unicorn Clan."

Daston looked back with surprise...  Amar eyed him, "We leave tomorrow... Best get some sleep..."

Shinjo Imra
Shinjo Family: +1 reflexes
Shinjo Bushi: +1 agility

Advantages:
Daredevil (3 points)
Allies: Merchant Lord Amar 1 influence (1 points)
Inheritance: Father's high quality pearl encrusted dagger (5 points)
Leadership (6 points)

Disadvantages:
Gaijin name (Imra, Amir, meaning prince, 2 points)
Overconfident (3 points)
Sworn Enemy (The Advisor and Regent Caliph, Raffaj, kharmic enemy) (5 points)

Imra is an interesting fellow, he has a dusting of facial hair on a slender hawk-like face.  He wears traditional Rokugani garb but also wields a weapon and has certain mannerisms that are definitely gaijin in nature.  He fits perfectly in the unicorn clan, loves riding horses and sword play.  His choice of weapons while somewhat unique is not to odd considering his heritage.  Few know the truth, that he is the heir to the Caliph of Medinaat al-Salaam.  As an outcast and a criminal from that society though he can never return without clearing his name first.  He knows that something or someone cast dark magic to control him, but other than that he is happy in his new position.  He has gained the freedom he has always wanted and gets to see new lands.  His training in the unicorn clan is not totally unique in his acceptance into the clan.   The Merchant Lord Amar continues to work through his contacts to provide information to the young "prince" but with control of the medinaat now in his uncles hands, there is little that can be done.   So Daston now lives a second life, as Shinjo Imra within Rokugan.

When Lord Amar brought Daston to the clan, it was under the condition of sanctuary.  Daston was taken in, changed his name and initiated into the clan through the right of blood, who knows when or if he will be able to return home, but forever more, he is Unicorn.

Awesome and thrilling story. I like it. There is only one problem. I do not believe that your disadvantage "Sworn Enemy (The Advisor and Regent Caliph, Raffaj, kharmic enemy) (5 points)" will come into play in this very land locked story at all. That will need to be changed. Obviously this is also not after the destroyer war, but that is fixed easily. The Unicorn are spread thin, bringing justice to the Empire with their magistrates.

All in all, I think its a good base to build from if you want to go down this rout. But, we will need to edit it some.

Sounds good!

I did some reading, few things,  Looks like the Shinjo family is in fact the family that is involved in the swearing of loyalty by Gaijin.  I assume that means you become Shinjo, the ritual is a little sketchy (way of the unicorn blood rite).

I believe we are at the point where the Caliph is now a "powerful" mage while they have a puppet sultan, so those things can be changed.

I think we can tone down the sword enemy due to the distance, but I don't see it outside the realm of thought that I am a lose end to a coup essentially... I'll look over advantages/disadvantages today and bring the old way/secrets of the unicorn and take some notes down.

Rest we can discuss online.

Ok, ya I thought the Sultan was in control. Do you want to be of the royal line?

But I think we can make this work. I just am a fan of disadvantages being in the game itself. This is a city locked game, with only minimal travels outside of the city, and rarely anywhere above the Spine of the World  Mountains. As such, a sworn enemy from outside of the empire who virtually has little ability to be a thorn in your side without causing a massive war, and you have no ability to go and a address him means that the disadvantage will never come into play, and if it does it would be maybe an assassination attempt... and as we saw last night those happen like clock work Wink We just need to find something else to fill in the void there.

It's okay, He was meant for another particular campaign in mind, I believe I made him for a post destroyer war position.  I do have to meet the needs of the campaign so we'll see what I end up playing, but if we ever do second city, this guy is in.

I think Imra is a solid second city candidate.   He'll be fun to play since its been a while since I played a unicorn if we do second city.
