Wait... what.
You give phoenix a bushi support Sensei... when right now there are only 3 Ivory legal samurai (none of which are actually in the Ivory Edition set...) unless there are 3-4 unreleased shiba samurai I'm just baffled.

Re: Wait... what.
Wouldn't this be support for a shugenja samurai hybrid deck, not a straight samurai deck?
Could also run non-aligned samurai, or samurai from other clans as it does not specify clan alignment requirement.

I'm sure there will be more samurai previewed in Round 2. This sensei+stronghold combo are looking in dire need of help though.

Nobody said it was a straight samurai deck. I simply said it was a bushi support sensei. Meaning it's the sensei that allows the phoenix box to field samurai. The two printed non-unique samurai and the one unique one that are currently available in clan fields you 7 dudes in your entire deck that can go to battle. Whee.

"For the Phoenix's sensei, we give them minus one gold and force them to go out of clan to play the theme". GREAT DESIGN THERE.
After thinking about this all day long, the ONLY thing I can think of is that phoenix samurai are all going to be cheap, to make up for this. And by cheap, I don't mean "undercosted"... I just mean cheap. We'll probably see a blank 3f 2c at 3g, and another at 1f or 2f at 3g with a printed ability. Then another at 5g probably 3f and an ability, and then a unique at 7g.
Phoenix samurai will be shitty, but they will be cheap. Which fits with the theme (buffing them from home with your shugenja) but still doesn't get around the fact that you will be sending 1/2 to 3/4 of the dudes to battle as your opponent, and your dudes will be worse. There needs to be some SERIOUS spell support previewed to make this even somewhat viable. I honestly do not see this combination being remotely competitive until the 2nd xpac of Ivory 1.

I'm sure it will have great personality support, and its already getting some amazing actions back, like Final Sacrifice, but it has too many moving parts, and the -1g is a kick in the nuts. It will be slow and inconsistent.

Re: Wait... what.
I suspect if there is a neutral or cheaply costed samurai for any clan that is viable it'll be played in multiple clans due to the change to blood money. Right?
Just a thought... As for the loss of 1 gold... that's rough but I don't know about how the design team is pushing the whole sensei idea. Then again I'm sure the lion aren't crying over others being 3 gold XD

So you'll have cheap bodies to go to battle with the hopes of your hand or other actions help them? welcome o Crane buddy! excluding IE as of now of course but you're like the CE or EE crane now. your taxes for Temple of Purity I guess.
