How to fix the problem with going second

I think I've just figured out an elegant solution to the problem of going second. Make the sensei dual sides and only give their penalties when going first. So spider, mantis, scorpion and lion would only get the -1 province strength when going first, etc. This especially helps balance out the mirror. Thoughts?

Elegant, but only if designed as so.  Todori gains no benefit, Akagi gains no benefit (not that it particularly needs it), and mahatsu sensei becomes NUTS for scorpion/spider who aren't running a sensei.

I do think that giving everyone +1g on the back side of their stronghold is beneficial. (+2 would require the turn 2 activation like bamboo harvesters and that's inelegant) Possibly starting with an extra card as well? Or maybe give everyone going second the double mulligan?

You would see arguements that the double mulligan should be for everyone to increase the stability of gold starts for everyone.  

It's hard though...

I like the double sided strongholds and gold pooling. Something needs to be done to address the disadvantage of going second, especially in a mirror.

+2 province str and +1 card would be ideal for every faction but is boring.

I just want to point out how poorly the bottom half of clans did. Don't have time to check the exact statistics since I'm at work but everyone with 3 honor or less did abyssmal.

Right, but we're more talking about top 8's across the board. I think there was like 2 scorpion, 1 spider, and then the rest of all the top 8's last weekend were Lion, Crane, Phoenix, and Dragon. Oddly enough, they are all clans that go first the majority of the time.
